Elisabeth was, without doubt, a big part of what I would class as the

"golden age" of Doctor Who (the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker eras),

it's modern incarnation and, of course, The Sarah Jane Adventures.

She was a fine and very likeable actress, and will be sadly missed

by myself and, no doubt, billions of Doctor Who fans worldwide.

Rather than entirely calling it a day with the site, CosmoBells now continues purely on a non-sharity basis. From now on, this blog will be just my outlet to share any dibs and dabs of info which I feel like putting up and as a bit of self-promotion for any personal projects I might be up to.

There's plenty of stuff - around 3 years worth(!) - to download in the archives but, as always is the rule, get them while you can, if you can. There won't be any reposts, re-uploads and the like (so don't ask!).

There are plenty of links to other sites that haven't been abused like this one has where you might find what you're looking for. Plus, I hear Cosmogeddon is a decent new blog of that nature... ;)

So we got a charity album, a decades old cd single, some music "mixtape" ripped from a teletext broadcast compilated by someone else which you could hardly call cd quality, and a bunch of well and truly ancient Max Bygraves vinyl!

So that's it, it's over now for this blog. I really can't see the point in continuing with CosmoBells anymore. I'm getting hassles left, right and center for the stuff I'm sharing here. Rapidshare no longer give premium points for downloads and Megaupload is worser than Rapidshare. And what with the endless requests for reposts and other stuff, I think the time is well and truly come to call it a day. It's been an interesting few years but, at the end of the day, it had come to a point anyway where I was wondering what the point of carrying on is since I'm not really getting anything out of it except endless hassles and risks.

Now you might think I should just continue and let those in charge take things down if they get complaints but, really, this is the final straw in a whole bag of slowly rotting hay. I hope and trust you enjoyed CosmoBells for it's brief few years of insane and unusual excellence, originality and surrealness. To those who constantly supported CosmoBells and my previous blogs throughout the years, I thank you dearly.

Apocalypse Mercenaries

Here we have 80s trash war movie Apocalypse Mercenaries aka Mercenari Dell'Apocalisse from Italian director Leandro Lucchetti (aka John Dowson). The badly dubbed actors include Vasilli Karis, Bruno Bilotta (aka Karl Landgren) and Brigitte Christensen. Also starring a lot of poorly edited stock footage. You may have caught the trailer doing the rounds on Youtube and the like (embedded below this post) - so if you enjoyed that then I think you're more than prepared for the actual feature! It's hilariously bad, extremely low budget and charmingly so... Great music too!

The plot: An elite group of five mercenaries, each with highly specialised skills, are hired to take out a German Command Center situated deep within a lime stone cavern system. Along the way to this objective, our intrepid soldiers of fortune also undertake various sub missions including blowing up an arms supply train and a German airfield (presumably said missions included by the filmmakers to pad out proceedings somewhat).

I ripped this from the Inglorious Bastards 2 - Hell's Heroes 4-movie dvd set released by Video Asia. All of the movies on this weird low-budget release were obviously sourced from old VHS tapes and have irremovable Asian subtitles and, yet, the low quality just adds to the fun. And anyway, the set was a snitch at $5 and it seems to be the only place to see these particular films (at least in English) on dvd. Plus the release is region free. Really, there's absolutely nothing to complain about as long as you know what you're getting (someone should tell that to a few 1-star giving Amazon reviewers)...

Apocalypse Mercenaries is old-school 80s mindless action trash video rental fun - the like of which we don't really get anymore. Enjoy with a few pints, snacks and some daft mates.

Top Dog - A Retrospective Of Classic TV & Radio Themes 1960-1982

Part of a recent series of De Wolfe library compilations, here we have the very recent and decent Top Dog. Subtitled "A Retrospective Of Classic TV & Radio Themes 1960-1982", Top Dog does what it says on the tin. I'll be honest and say that, personally speaking, I'm not too chuffed with it due to the simple fact that most - if not all - of these tracks can be found on other similar (and better) compilations. But if you need yet another easy listening/lounge/library tv and radio theme collection then this will certainly do for a pleasant enough listen. Best thing to be said about Top Dog is that there are plenty of classics on here and the sound quality is beautifully crisp and sparkly. Many a library/tv music composer legend is catered for with Johnny Hawksworth in particular getting a good amount of coverage. Retro/cult British tv theme faves such as "Eye Level" (aka the theme from Van Der Valk), "Liberty Bell" (you know it best as Monty Python's Flying Circus), "Domino" (Never The Twain), "Up To Date" (Man About The House), "Distant Hills" (Crown Court), "George & Mildred" (aka... George & Mildred) and the funktastic "Precinct" (previously the theme to the cult 70s Jon Pertwee-hosted murder quiz Whodunnit?) along with the whacky offbeat themes to the Bob Godfrey animated classics Henry's Cat and Roobarb and a few lesser heard tracks make Top Dog a very palatable - if not entirely essential - collection. Also, for newcomers to collecting cult tv/library music, Top Dog isn't a bad place to start.

Freakily enough, I just posted the promo video for "Tuckbar Fantasy" - of which the title actually came courtesy of Leslie Nielsen when he appeared on An Audience With Jimmy Tarbuck and called him "Mister Tuckbar" - possibly the only genuinely funny thing in the whole show...

Anyway, even though I planned on not doing any more RIP tribute posts (which you may have noticed) - as there seems to be so many great entertainers dying this year and I don't want to bog CosmoBells down with endless RIP posts - I thought Leslie deserved it because I'm such a huge fan of Police Squad (practically obsessively so) and am often quoting his lines from that show.

CosmoBells has it's third anniversary today and what better way to celebrate it than a share of this spanking brand new compilation of library/tv/testcard/interlude music from the same people that bought you the equally excellent must-own comps: Girl In A Suitcase, Watch With Teacher, Natural Born Fillers, Cocktail Swing, The Day The TV Stood Still, Department TV and Girl In A Suitcase (Upgraded).

As you can read from the cover, this superb compilation features two discs comprising of 62(!) tracks which have been used variously on good old British television back in the day whether it be tv shows (such as Crown Court, Hark At Barker, The Village, ...And Mother Makes Three, Queenie's Castle, Potter and Finding Out, amonst many others), testcards, interludes, incidental music and the like. Faves on here include Paddy Kingsland's "March Of The Moogs" - best known to me as the theme tune to both Tripper's Day (Leonard Rossiter's final show before he died) and it's follow-up series Slinger's Day (a better series which starred Bruce Forsyth in a rare and rather excellent acting outing), "Distant Hills" - the end theme to Crown Court (also available on the excellent Cult Fiction Royale), a great bit of disco called "Dot's" by The Bruton Players, "Airedale Curry" has 80s daytime-afternoon quiz show theme tune written all over it, Nick Glennie-Smith's synthtastic "Looking Forward", The Bruton Beat's "Soul Machine", The Bruton Players' "Lots Of Fun" and all the Keith Mansfield stuff on this collection is top notch.

Personally speaking, both discs are superb but I have a preference for the second disc which has a lot of synthy/electronic and disco/funk-style tracks as opposed to the easy listening "classical"-type stuff on the first disc which I've got a bit tired of hearing in recent times. Highlight for me is The Bruton Beat's "Winners" which was used as the theme music to the feature-length Return Of The Saint adventure The Saint And The Brave Goose. All I can say is that Music While You Watch is yet another absolute must-own from the WHR label. Enjoy and happy third birthday CosmoBells! ;)

Here it is - the "holy grail" of Little & Large records: Around The Old Camp Fire! This cost quite a bit on ebay but it was worth every pound/euro... Much loved and remembered by those who were there at the time (like myself), Around The Old Camp Fire should have been a hit but it wasn't. But everyone - including myself - seems to remember it from the performance on The Little & Large Show - so that only proves how extremely popular Syd and Eddie were at that point. Aaahh yes. The good old fun loving days where you could look forward to a decent Saturday early evening comedy variety show - Little & Large, Russ Abbot, Bobby Davro, even Michael Barrymore had it in him at some point (but we won't go into that). How times have sadly changed... Well, anyway, onto the record...

"Around The Old Camp Fire" is a nostalgic anecdotal tale of being a boy scout, singing songs and eating fairy cakes whilst sitting around the old camp fire "where the mushrooms used to grow and me muscles you to show". It's a splendid bit of harmless fun and an insanely catchy track to boot. It's a bit of a crime that it hasn't been reissued on some novelty compilation. The b-side - "I'm In Love With Angela Rippon" - is rather horrible and is twice the length of the superior a-side although it does feature the amusing line: "There's nowhere on Earth that I wouldn't take her - She's much nicer legs than Richard Baker." Note that the song chorus actually goes "We're in love with Angela Rippon" and not "I'm in love with Angela Rippon" which it is actually titled. For the record, I could never stand Angela Rippon - I was always more of an Anna Ford kinda guy.

Ingfried Hoffmann - Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt

Had this one for a few years now and so I thought I'd put it up as I plan on sharing a few classic soundtrack/library/etc oldies such as this on a more regular basis like I used to years ago. Here we have Ingfried Hoffmann's superb soundtrack to the German cult classic kids' puppet show Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt. A pioneering and very imaginative show at the time, the series was originally produced by WDR in 1972 based on a 1967 book written by Boy Lornsen and illustrated by Franz Josef Tripp. The story was about a boy called Tobias Findteisen - Tobbi for short - who invents a machine/vehicle called the "Fliewatüüt" that can be driven like a car, fly and swim. Co-piloting the machine with Tobbi was a robot called "ROB 344-66/IIIa" or Robbi for short. As you can expect, Robbi and Tobbi had great adventures with the machine. Oh, by the way, to make things even more interesting - the machine ran on raspberry juice (Himbeersaft)! Anyway, back to the soundtrack!...

The theme tune is superb - having all the groovy, funky and easy qualities you would expect of a theme tune for a show of it's kind from the early 70s. Listen carefully to the track and see if you can spot the blatant steal of the theme music to my fave Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service! Scattered amongst the excellent music are dialogue clips from the series. The final track is Frank Popp's rather nice acid jazz remix of the excellent groovy theme music. Hard to pick a fave track on here as it's all excellent but "Himbeersaft" - a deep down and dirty retread of the theme tune - is rather splendid and there's a lovely easy flutey tune in the form of "Schlafvorbereitung im Leuchtturm" which sounds like it could have been a 70s sitcom theme. "Nordpol" and "Kartoffelschälmusik" will certainly please those who enjoy listening to groovy easy listening comps such as The Sound Gallery. "Nessie" has an excellent bit of breakbeat - perfect for sampling and "Prüfung bestanden" has testcard music written all over it. Probably, if I had to pick one - I would say that the best track on here for me is the roaring "Guten Flug! (Orgel)". Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt is an absolute must for collectors of groovy and funky cult tv classics and library music. You won't be disappointed.

The Strange Affair

"You're underage, oversexed and I'm not getting thrown off the force because of you!"
Here we have the very rare 1968 gritty British crime drama The Strange Affair. Starring Michael York, Susan George and Jeremy Kemp, amongst others. There are quite a few well known British faces amongst the cast including George A. Cooper - best known as Grange Hill caretaker "Mr. Griffiths". Directed by the late David Greene. Being a Susan George fan (in my opinion Susan George is one of the loveliest actresses ever to grace the screen), this is a total must-own for me. This rip (not by me) is not the greatest quality but it certainly does the job in a time where you can't get this movie on either video or dvd and is rarely shown on television (if ever at all). If there was one film I have been endlessly waiting for a high quality dvd release of - it would be this one. Unfortunately, what we have here is a dodgy rip from an old VHS but it is way better than nothing despite some jerkiness on the movement.

The plot: Michael York plays a rookie London policeman who is appalled at the corruption surrounding him. He does not find comfort in the fact that his own superior (Jeremy Kemp) is just as crooked as the crooks. Susan George - exploiting her jailbait sexiness to the full (as she did in her following starring roles in Twinky and Straw Dogs) is "Frederika" - an underaged hippie "mod" girl who seduces York and with whom a brief affair happens.

The Strange Affair is a superb slice of swinging sixties kino with great acting and memorable dialogue.

Babylon Zoo - Spaceman

Aaaah. Oh yes. 1996. Great year. Great days. Great times. One of the greatest years I ever lived. I won't go into details - it's very personal... But one of my greatest memories of that brilliant year was Babylon Zoo's Spaceman. Bloody awesome, it was. Used on one of the last great Levi's Jeans ads before it all went downhill in the 2000s (the last great Levi's ad being the brilliant Flat Eric ads in 1999). Babylon Zoo, of course (and for the uninitiated), was fellow West Midlander, former Sand King and future Pleiadian "Jas Mann" - the puff pastry hangman who shall become a genius and was possibly born with a few more genes than the rest of us. I can relate to that prognosis... Although he never wrote a spherical song, apparently. Unlike Michael Nyman, of course. Who can forget that #1 performance on Top Of The Pops with Jas Mann in a long dress pretending to be the second coming of Ziggy Stardust surrounded by those X-Files-style alien dj greys on the turntables. Who can forget it? Eh? Anyone? Well, I'll never forget it! An unusual share on CosmoBells you might possibly be thinking but I plan on sharing tons more of my cd singles collection as time goes on - so be prepared and enjoy the 90s nostalgia! In the mean time, give me some space, man...

Where The Truth Lies

Here's an absolute fave of mine that I thought I'd rip and share with my fellow CosmoBellians! Where The Truth Lies is a brilliant piece of dark and sexy adult drama, superbly acted by the ever excellent Colin Firth and the equally ever excellent Kevin Bacon. Two leads on top form with the extremely gorgeous Alison Lohman - a beautiful actress who starred in one of my fave (and unfortunately cancelled before time) tv shows of the last decade (still awaiting a dvd release) called Pasadena. Amongst the excellent cast are the gorgeous and always watchable Rachel Blanchard (the star of the Clueless tv spin-off amongst many others), lovely Kristin Adams (as the very tempting Alice), David Hayman, the late Maury Chaykin, Sonja Bennett and Beau Starr, amongst others. Written and directed by Atom Egoyan, based on the novel by Rupert Holmes.

The plot: The acclaimed comedy team of Lanny Morris (Bacon) and Vince Collins (Firth) are at the top of their game when a beautiful woman is found dead in their hotel suite. Though both stars have airtight alibis, the resulting scandal forces the duo to terminate the act. Now, years after the breakup, journalist Karen O'Connor (Lohman) resolves to uncover the truth that lies behind the mysterious incident.

A quiet gem of the film, Where The Truth Lies is a riveting late night must-watch in my opinion and features one of my all-time favourite erotic movie scenes (the highly charged sex scene with Lohman and Adams - often requested on internet forums, I've noticed!).

CosmoBells' good mate Ooey has ripped and uploaded another fine batch of excellent music used on Ceefax broadcasts (if you missed it - click here for the first batch). Really great stuff - a must download for all fans of testcard (click the link and/or search the archive - you'll find tons of superb testcard music posts on CosmoBells!) and cult tv music. There are 23 tracks plus a small selection of bonus tracks such as the theme tunes to Think Again! (excellent - an absolute classic tv theme), Go With Noakes and, oh yes(!), Kickstart which, weirdly enough, I've been listening to a lot lately before Ooey even turned up with it! Woooah! Psychic mind games! Heh heh. Anyway, I highly recommend this compilation - the tracks are absolutely first class and superb quality. Nick Haydn's "Tale of Mystery", The Strings Orchestra's "Gibbsville" and The Martinez Players' "Blowy Days" have already become personal favourites of mine... Nice work, Ooey. Cheers! ;)

Jan Graveson - Anyone Who Had A Heart

Here we have acclaimed actress - the very lovely Jan Graveson - with her quite simply superb 1991 baggified downtempo dance house cover of the Bacharach & David classic "Anyone Who Had A Heart". This has to be, without doubt, my favourite version of the song and it is one I can listen to on repeated play for ages (although I also like the Cilla Black version - I'm not so keen on Dionne Warwick's version no matter what she says about Cilla's!). The sound and style reminds me a bit of the equally excellent 1992 cover of another sixties hit - "The Crying Game" by Boy George which was produced by the Pet Shop Boys. Jan, for those long enough like myself to remember, released "Anyone Who Had A Heart" on the back of her very memorable role in Eastenders as Disa O'Brien - the homeless friend of runaway Diane Butcher. Disa was a classic tragi-character of it's time in an era when Eastenders was constantly on top form. Anyway, back to "Anyone Who Had A Heart"! This is quite a rare and collectible release now and is well worth having for the radio and extended versions alone. Third track "Gonna" is a decent enough housey-housey Cathy Dennis-style number co-written by Jan which sounds good enough to have been a follow-up single albeit probably a least successful one. As a b-side it makes for a very nice listen indeed and is the kind of track I can easily see making it onto retro-obscuro 90s dance compilations. All in all, it's all good stuff from a far better time (at least in retrospect) in pop music.

Here we have the second of a 6-vinyl set of Max Bygraves sing-a-long medley madness. The thing I like most about this one is that funny cover - should be a poster that should! Dig those Union Jack umbrellas there! Aaah, yes - the good old days. The thing is, that cover really doesn't depict what's on the record. Looking at that pic, I would be expecting a good old knees up. "Don't dilly dally on the way" - and all that "down at the old bull and bush"-type stuff. But no, with the exception of the Tin Pan Alley medley that features the classic "My Melancholy Baby" (Chas & Dave would later score an excellent hit with the song), most of this disc is made up of lovey dovey ballads. There's some upbeat tunes to enjoy but it seems Max has mixed them into the downbeat stuff making for some awkward moodswinging medleys in my own personal opinion. Still, it's Max. So if you love Max then you'll need this Max for your Max collection. Enjoy!

I've been planning on ripping and sharing this rather collectible 1975 Reader's Digest box set of medley mad Max for years! Finally, I've got round to doing it! Rather than put up the complete set all at once, here's the first disc to test the waters and see if people want it and it's worth continuing with... Comments/encouragement are welcome!

Before anyone points it out - the blue-green light on the box cover on the bottom right corner is actually part of the cover and not the result of flash photography! I scanned it anyway - just in case you're wondering... You might think they put the light there to add a bit of excitement and make Max glamourous or something like that but, in fact, he is actually standing in front of the mothership from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He was one of the humans that the aliens abducted but bought back at a later date (some may think it wasn't late enough) - hence the reason he is still singing songs from "the good old days" because he doesn't know we've moved on from "Say, Has Anyone Seen My Gypsy Rose" and "Happy Days Are Here Again". It would take him another millenia before he does the "Poker Face - Genie In A Bottle - All The Things She Said" Medley. Anyway, enough of this bizarre chit chat and onto the first record...

Max "The Bouncer" Bygraves, yesterday.

Max begins this set in great style with a jolly medley consisting of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing", "Everywhere You Go", " All I Do Is Dream Of You" and "If I Had A Talking Picture Of You". From then on, it's a mix of slowies and slightly more upbeat songs - some taken from famous musicals such as Annie Get Your Gun, The King & I and Cabaret. He also does "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" and "When You Wore A Tulip" but, funnily enough, he doesn't do his famous "Tulips From Amsterdam" here to make the obvious treble. But still there seems to be more songs on this disc about tulips than the alleged "love" of the title so maybe it should have been called Tulip Love rather than True Love instead... I have to say that some of this stuff just isn't really my cup of coffee at all. Some of it I found rather cringemaking. In fact, at one point when I was listening whilst I was drinking a cuppa, I cringed so much that I actually ended up choking. I blame Max for that. But don't let my personal feelings put you off. If you're into the easy listening/lounge scene then this is a must-own and Max Bygraves - whether you like him or not - it can't be denied that he was one of the kings of British showbiz.

Don't be fooled by the title there - this isn't Vol.10 of a series called Congalongamax - that would be just too crazy! No, it is, in fact, the tenth volume of Max Bygraves' top-selling Singalongamax series - this one being the excitingly titled Viva! Congalongamax with the kind of cover image that collectors of kitsch and amusing vinyl cover art and photography lap up as soon as eye contact is made... Which is exactly what happened with me, you see! You've got to admire anyone who can pull off a cover like that and still keep his integrity and career completely intact! That and going on to present Family Fortunes. Altogether now: "Biiiig moneeeey!" Also love the "Ole! May Bygraves" signature at the bottom right of the cover there - nice touch, Max! Ole!, indeed!... "Yeah, I love the cover but what's the music like?", you're probably now asking...

Bygraves is on top form here (as he always was on all of his records - a mere quick listen tells you that you're listening to a man who loved his work) - sounding a touch more laid back than he does on his masterpiece Discolongamax. Bygraves himself had the idea for the album after spending some time in Latin America. Covering a quite wide range of tourist spots from Spain and Brazil to Jamaica and Mexico, the album is ideal for shaking your maracas to. First track is a great starter with Max shouting "Enjoy yourself!" in a way only Max can to amusing effect. This is followed by the holiday party likes of "Y Viva Espana", "The Laughing Samba" and "Quando Quando Quando" along with slow and easy smoothers such as "And I Love You So", "Spanish Eyes", "Yellow Bird" and "Amor Amor". Personal faves would have to be "Singalonga Conga" and the "Enjoy Yourself" medley. Viva! Congalongamax is produced by the legendary Norrie Paramor.

Incidentally, I originally ripped and shared this years ago on my old turntable at 192 kbps but this one here be a spanking fresh and crisp sounding 320 kbps rip. For those that want it, I'll be re-ripping the "awesome" Discolongamax soon as the ages old 192 kbps rip I shared again recently doesn't sound that good in retrospect.

Viva! Congalongamax is a must own for the easy listening/lounge crowd so those of you out there with such an inkling for that particular music genre should download and follow Maxie's sound advice: Enjoy yourself and singalonga conga!

Musikladen Special - Shakin' Stevens Live

Here we have a bloody superb live concert performance from the total legend that is the one and only Shakin' Stevens on the legendary German pop show Musikladen. When Shakin' Stevens hit the scene in the early 80s, it was a breath of fresh air. Sure, there had been a rockabilly thing going on for a while in the forms of the legendary Showaddywaddy and the absolutely excellent Stray Cats... But Shaky was rockabilly and rock 'n' roll incarnate. He seemed to be the one the old school rock 'n' rollers were waiting for... It was as if the late great Elvis had been reborn or reincarnated as a Welsh milkman! (For the uninitiated, Shaky - real name Michael Barrett - is a Welsh man and used to be a milkman before he hit pop stardom. I wonder if anyone ever asked him for a milk shake!...). Shaky was the absolute creme de la creme of rockabilly as far as I'm concerned. He was so bloody brilliant that Fulchester United even signed him up for some memorable matches with Billy The Fish! Heh heh. Shaky was loved by just about everyone - djs, moms, dads, grannies, teenies and even the New Romantic and gender bending pop crowd (Boy George and Phil Oakey were allegedly fans). Shaky was the real deal and that's what made his otherwise supposedly "outdated" music style work to a very popular demographic. I don't think any modern rockabilly acts out there today in this day and age would be able to pull off the amount of hits and popularity that Shaky had back in his prime - it was amazing enough that he did it in the 80s, the age of electronics, dance music, new wave, new romantics and the dawn of hip hop (to count just a few music genres that occurred bigtime during the 80s).

Early hits are performed here with extreme gusto - and a lot of sweat - such as "Hot Dog", "Marie, Marie", "Shirley", "It's Raining" and the über classic that is "This Ole House". No "Green Door" though. This is a treat for Shaky fans so if you are one - then download, sit back, watch and enjoy! Incidentally, this rip is really fresh - I just watched, recorded and ripped it as soon as it finished transmitting on television!

Lee Evans - So What Now?

From 2001, here we have So What Now? - a superb (at least in my opinion), hugely underrated and underappreciated Britcom high on farce and slapstick starring Lee Evans (also co-writer) along with top quality support from the ever watchable Stephen O'Donnell and acclaimed actress Sophie (sister of Emma) Thompson at her pottiest. Directed by the great Tony Dow with the late great Geoffrey Perkins serving as one of the executive producers. Hated by a lot of people or so it seems judging by what I've read on the net, So What Now? only lasted one series comprising of eight episodes - which is a shame as, personally, I found it good enough to have ran for at least one or two more seasons. Criticism has been levelled at the lack of development on the characters but, in my opinion, the characters are fine as they are. If there had been more series, I'm sure the characters would have been more fleshed out. Guest appearances include, amongst others, gorgeous Imogen Stubbs, Tony Gardner, David Ross (the original "Kryten" and also memorable as the voice of the talking toaster in Red Dwarf), and the late, legendary Hugh Lloyd who appears in possibly the most memorable episode in which he plays a crafty "old codger" who temporarily becomes a staying guest at the house being attended to his every need.

The plot: After being thrown out by wife Eileen, Lee then destroys his best friend Stuart's place in a gas explosion, and so the two are left flat-hunting. Although not intending to live together, the two are forced to take up lodgings in the home of the once reasonably wealthy Heather. Lee, accident-prone at the best of times, can't help but be stressed out under Heather's well-meaning but somewhat controlling nature...

The perfect sitcom vehicle for Lee Evans' physical comedy and very much a modern spin on Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, So What Now? may not be as well-received, much-loved and remembered as the afforementioned sitcom classic but, for me, it's one and only series is highly watchable, cosy entertainment with some charmingly daft and likeable characters, whacky scenarios, funny lines and stands up to repeated viewing.

From the people who bought you Girl In A Suitcase, Watch With Teacher, Natural Born Fillers, The Day The TV Stood Still, Department TV and Girl In A Suitcase (Upgraded), here is one of the earliest of their superb cult/retro tv/radio/library music releases - the increasingly incredibly rare 1999 release Cocktail Swing on the Codename Music label. Cocktail Swing is an absolute must-own for collectors and connoiseurs of testcard/tv/radio/library music. All of the music comes from legendary big bands The Johnny Howard Band and The Otto Keller Band. The vibe is totally of an easy listening-lounge-testcard nature - so from that description you should know what to expect: plenty of brass, dings, dongs, happy nostalgia and how's yer father. Pearls on here include the original theme tune to ITV's Wish You Were Here, "Carnaby Chick" from Radio 2's Two's Best and "Eye Catcher" for Radio 2's The Early Show. Plus Test Card Transmission Tape classics such as "That's How The Hula Was Born", "Don't Fall In Love", "King For A Night" and "You Blew It". "Cocktails For Two" and "Everybody Loves Somebody" were used when Radio 5's Test Match Cricket was abandoned due to "Rain Stopped Play". Like I say - Cocktail Swing is an absolute must-own so download, listen and enjoy the classic retro television sound they just don't make anymore. Incidentally, there's just one copy of this selling on Amazon.co.uk selling for a rather hefty £24.70 at the moment and it certainly didn't cost me pocket money! Here's an an age old fave of mine and this must be around the third or fourth time I've posted this through my blogging years (although, it seems, never on CosmoBells until now!). This highly collectible piece of novelty disco kitsch cost me quite a bit on a well known bidding site some years back - and it was worth every pound/euro spent! Just look at that cover! Surely worth an extortionate amount of money alone! Surely that's a look of pain rather than euphoric disco pleasure on Max's face there - looks like he's pulled a back muscle and that woman behind is just laughing at him! Despite the obvious disco bandwagon jumping by Max, this album has never failed to entertain, make me laugh, smile and even "get on the groove".

An offbeat entry into Bygraves' long-running Singalongamax series (he did another off-kilter entry in the form of Congalongamax!) - this edition must have confused and thrown a few of Max's old codger fans off track. Who'd have thought that ole Maxie would have it in him to dance it up to the max for the younger generation?! But the old pink toothbrusher totally gives it his all covering his favourite golden oldies and heard-to-death standards in a groovy new funky setting.

Every track an absolute 250 carat golden pearl, stand out tracks include the roaring starter "Get Me To The Church On Time", the storming "How You Gonna Keep Em Down On The Farm", the frantic "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" (in which Max turns into Jimmy Durante), the boppy "My Mammy", the funktastic retooling of the Maxie standard "Tulips Of Amsterdam" (features a great bit of trumpet!), brassy disco galore with "Somebody Stole My Gal" (great bit of sax on that one!) and the unbelievably hip and almost technofied "Ma (He's Making Eyes At Me)"! The Bygraves hit "You Need Hands" gets a nice and easy groover remake and Max also turns on the sexy soul with a smooth reworking of the old classic softie "Moonlight Serenade". The album ends on a slow note with the sombre sentimental standard "Feelings". The excellent production comes courtesy of Terry Brown with Frank Barber as arranger/composer/conductor. Backing vocals are provided by The Ladybirds (they appeared on The Benny Hill Show for most of it's run). None other than Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention plays on drums!

Very much similar in sound and style to the cult kitsch classic Deco Disco, the superior Discolongamax is a must-hear and must-own for fans and collectors of disco, easy listening and novelty pop. Certainly makes one wish he had done another disco album. In 2010, surely it's about time for a contemporary follow-up - Ravealongamax and Rapalongamax, anyone?!......

Longtime followers going back to my old Cosmoblog years may well remember my love - or at least appreciation - for legendary British novelty pop supremos Black Lace. It's been quite a few years since I last did a Black Lace post so here's a great one to make up lost time! For the uninitiated, Black Lace were a 2-man pop combo that had a string of top class anthemic novelty holiday pop hits back in the 80s. They originally began in the 70s as a fully fledged rock band and were the UK's official 1979 Eurovision entry with "Mary Ann" - a song that was a blatant copy of the Smokie hit "Oh Carol". "Mary Ann" came 7th at Eurovision and Black Lace eventually dwindled from a 5-piece to the legendary 2-man band partnership of Alan Barton and Colin Gibb which would give Brits and holidaymakers pleasure and nightmares in equal doses throughout the 80s such as "Superman", "Do The Conga" and the almighty "Agadoo" - a superior cover of a hit originally by the equally trashy Euro group The Saragossa Band. My personal Black Lace favourites, without doubt, have to be the double-whammy of "I Speaka Da Lingo" and "El Vino Collapso". Although a flop in comparison to the likes of "Superman", "Do The Conga" and - of course - "Agadoo", I think "I Speaka Da Lingo" and "El Vino Collapso" really demonstrate the genius of Black Lace to full effect.

For a brief period, Colin left the group and was replaced with Dene Michael who appears on "Wig Wam Bam" (and in the promo video). Colin returned not long afterwards and Alan, Colin and Dene appear together in the 80s cult classic movie Rita, Sue & Bob, Too performing "Gang Bang". In 1995, Alan Barton tragically died in a road accident in Germany whilst on tour with Smokie. He had been lead singer of the band, replacing Chris Norman since 1986. Smokie - with Barton - had just scored a smash hit with the decidedly Black Lace-like remake of the old Smokie classic "Living Next Door To Alice" - now called "Who The Fuck Is Alice" and co-performed with Roy "Chubby" Brown. When Barton had quit Black Lace, he was replaced with Rob Hopcraft. Rob is seen with Colin Gibb on the cover of the "Ultimate Party Video" and recorded the last of the Black Lace classics "I Am The Music Man" in which he also appears in the rather dodgy promo video.... Black Lace officially disbanded in 2000 when Rob left the band but has recently been bought back to life by former temporary member Dene Michael with newcomer Ian Robinson. But perhaps the less said about that particular revamp the better...

Essential, must-own compilation of Black Lace hits and misses - although it's actually missing a few essential Black Lace classics and, in my opinion, two of their best tracks: "El Vino Collapso" and "I Speaka Da Lingo". But not to worry, I've included those along with "Gang Bang" for completism's sake. Listen, laugh, dance, embarass yourself and enjoy!

What I would call the "holy grail" of Black Lace - the promo video collection! As cheap and cheerful as you can imagine and on the old Prism Leisure Video label to boot! (For those out there that didn't know or care, Prism Leisure was the company that released Kevin Toms' ultra huge smash hit legendary computer game Football Manager back in the 80s.) Every video is a pearl - in particular "El Vino Colapsso", "I Speaka Da Lingo", "Agadoo" and "Do The Conga" are stand-outs. Alan excells especially on "I Speaka Da Lingo" in which he gloriously portrays politically incorrect stereotypes of the French, Italian, Chinese and Russian. Plus Colin wins an Oscar for his portrayal of an Indian - straight out of It Ain't Half Hot Mum. Actually,"I Speaka Da Lingo" is the musical equivalent of Mind Your Language. Special mention must go to "I Am The Music Man" - which is so godawful and dodgy that it's brilliant. You just have to dig Colin and Rob's utterly garish idea of fashion mixed with all those hundreds of teenies and kiddies (Gary Glitter would have loved to have appeared in this) - you won't know whether to laugh, cry or vomit.

One thing that is apparent from watching the Black Lace promo videos is what a superb performer Alan Barton was. The joy, fun and total commitment and professionalism he bought to his performances are there for all to see - he would have made a great actor or comedy entertainer. Alan steals the show in every Black Lace video he appears in. Incidentally, Alan Barton's sons Dean and Lee appear in the hilarious video for the excellent "I Speaka Da Lingo" (you'll probably spot who they are from the hair styles!).

When Nickelodeon was the absolute kids/teen channel of choice back in the 90s (unlike the totally abysmal and utterly retarded Spongebob overkill dreck it has become in the last decade), Kenan & Kel (aka Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell) ruled along with other shows like Clarissa Explains It All, Sister, Sister (an ABC/WB show that was shown on Nick in the UK), Ren & Stimpy, etc. I'm not ashamed to say that I was a fan of their whacky series and, to this day, their shows are a great bit of escapist nonsense. The nutty 1997 big screen movie spin-off Good Burger is as good as their tv show in my opinion. The dvd - only ever released on Region 1 (USA & Canada) - which I managed to buy on import a few months back - is a long deleted rarity and often sells for quite a lot more than it's original retail price. Kenan & Kel made only one other movie together - the made-for-tv movie Two Heads Are Better Than None (aka Kenan & Kel - The Movie) in 2000.

The plot: Dexter Reed, a high-schooler is forced to get a summer job at a fast food restaurant called Good Burger after causing a car wreck by his school teacher Mr. Wheat. So Dexter must pay off his teacher's car by working very hard at Good Burger. Meanwhile things turn for the worse when Mondo Burger, a mammoth fast-food chain opens across the street and it looks like Good Burger is soon going to be history for good! Now it is up to Dexter and his new friend Ed the not-so bright cashier to save the day, as they develop a delicious special secret sauce that Ed creates and brings hundreds of new customers to their door - making their new competition desperate to steal the recipe and all of their customers. Teen actors Kel and Kenan from Nickelodeon fame make their feature film debut in this innocent, silly romp as employees trying to prevent the takeover of their fast food restaurant by the mega burger conglomerate across the street. Similar to comedy teams of the past, Kel is the dim-witted Ed and Kenan is the schemer Dexter, always looking for a quick way out of hard labor. The pre-adolescent humor of the film is as goofy as it is charming and the energetic duo of K&K serves up an entertaining meal for the kiddies. Shaquille O'Neal makes a cameo as does funk meister George Clinton. And yes, that is Abe Vigoda by that fry machine!

Good Burger is a total joy from start to finish. Charming, silly, fun and highly amusing comedy entertainment for the whole family from a double act I wish had lasted longer. Kel Mitchell, in particular, is on absolute hilarious top form here and, without doubt, steals the show. The interaction between Kenan and Sinbad is also very funny. Abe Vigoda is a pearl as the very old, death obsessed fryer and has some hilarious one-liners. Sinbad is also a bit of a treat as the desperately-trying-to-be-hip teacher who is making Kenan pay for damaging his car. A nice and easy feel good movie with a classic, cliched plot, likable characters and some hilarious situations and lines. For some, maybe Good Burger would be regarded as a guilty pleasure but for me it is just purely a pleasure. Simple, ridiculous, utterly charming and hilarious. It's right up there with another fave of mine: Big Fat Liar.

For a quickie post, I thought I'd put up this absolute classic bit of cult comedy 80s coming of ageness from brilliant cult Aussie director Bruce Beresford (the Barry Mackenzie films, Driving Miss Daisy, etc). Starring Nell Schofield and Jad Capelja.

The plot: Meet Sue, a teenage Australian girl in the late 70s, whose life mainly consists of doing what everyone else does - watch the surfing boys and have sex with the same surfing boys. The girls have to follow lots of strange customs, e.g. do not eat or go to the bathroom when a boy is around. Ugly girls have two choices - being bitches and hate boys, or being generally cheap and looked down upon by everyone. The afternoons are spent on the beaches, in the backseats of car or at home-alone-parties where sex and alcohol are the main ingredients. Parents and teachers are trying to straighten the kids out, but that is not easy.

Schoolgirls, surfing, sex - welcome to Australia's answer to Grange Hill! I've often seen this movie being described as "trash" but I've always found it to be nothing of the kind. A moderately realistic portrayal of adolescent school life, Puberty Blues is a very welcome antidote to the more popular, hazily idealistic, sugar-coated, sell-a-hip-soundtrack, 80s American teen movies such as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink.

So, it finally happened. Cult, controversial, excessively cheezey and - to a great extent - utterly bizarre and slightly perverse 80s shitcom Small Wonder got a dvd release! Never saw that coming although I always lived in hope! Cute Tiffany Brissette stars as V.I.C.I. aka "Vicky" the superhuman robot slave girl who gets up to all sorts of antics whilst living with a supposedly loving and caring human family (who force her to be a maid and sleep in a closet). Other cast includes Dick Christie (check out that freaky grin on the titles!), the rather dishy Marla Pennington, the memorable Jerry Supiran (the subject of many a "whatever happened to him"), the extremely annoying Emily Schulman and the ever great (and annoying in equal measures) Edie McClurg. The show originally ran from 1985 to 1989 for four seasons totalling 96 episodes (24 per season).

The plot: Ted Lawson, an engineer/inventor for United Robotronics, creates an android in the form of a 10-year-old girl in an effort to assist handicapped children. He names the robot girl V.I.C.I (which stands for "Voice Input Child Identicant"), pronounced "Vicky". The robot is taken home by Lawson so that it can mature within a family environment. V.I.C.I.'s features include superhuman strength and speed, an AC outlet under her right arm, a parallel port under her left arm, and an access panel in her back. Despite this, the Lawson family tries to pass the robot off as their adopted daughter. The Lawson family tries to keep the robot's existence a secret, but their disagreeable neighbours, the Brindles, keep on popping up at the most unexpected moments — especially nosy red-headed girl-next-door Harriet and her parents, Bonnie and Brandon; the latter just happens to be Ted Lawson's co-worker. The show's humor frequently derived from V.I.C.I.'s attempts to learn human behavior, V.I.C.I's literal interpretation of speech and the family's efforts to disguise the robot's true nature. To explain child actress Tiffany Brissette's aging during the show, Ted gave V.I.C.I. an upgrade in the series's third season. He aged her face, dressed her in modern clothes, and allowed her to eat and drink. The food passed through her naturally and the drink cooled her internal system.

Despite a lot of apparent negative reaction with Small Wonder during it's original (and I think only) run on pre-satellite/cable British television, many of my generation have fond-ish memories of watching this show mid-Saturday afternoons (or Sunday - depending on the ITV region) - although I'm sure there are some out there who would now attribute those memories to being awful nightmares. I was surprised to see this ran for four seasons because it was only shown on British tv on the ITV network for a very short time (only about half of the first season apparently) before being taken off - despite decent ratings. I never saw the show ever again until clips and low quality full episodes turned up on the net a few years back. Apparently, Sky One showed it in the early 90s - but I never caught it. Personally speaking, along with my younger brother and sister, I was a Small Wonder fan back in my kiddy years. In fact, I was a big follower of most US and British sitcoms back in the day so the obvious tackiness and more controversial ideas didn't wash over me back then and, at any rate, I was a sucker for a US sitcom with some far-out gimmick (Mork & Mindy and Soap were other faves of mine). For fans and newcomers alike, now you can see what all the fuss was about!...

For those that requested it, here's The Boys In Blue yet again. Last time for a repost of this one for a while so, as I always say, if you want it then get it while you can!

Despite being known as "the poor man's Morecambe & Wise", Cannon & Ball had a charm and personality which are now sadly missing from most of today's so called comedy acts. In 1982, they had reached such a huge status in Britain (and you couldn't escape their "Rock on, Tommy!" catchphrase at the time) that they got to star in their own feature-length comedy movie vehicle - The Boys In Blue, a remake of the old Will Hay classic Ask A Policeman. Hated by critics and, supposedly, much of the general public who went to the cinema to see it, The Boys In Blue was branded a bit of a flop. But it fared far better on the video rental circuit during the mid-80s where it was more appreciated as home viewing rather than when it was released on the big screen.

The plot: Sgt. Cannon (Tommy Cannon) and PC Ball (Bobby Ball) run the police station in the quiet town of Little Botham. When the station is threatened with closure due to a lack of crime, they decide to invent some crimes to justify their existence. When they try to steal a painting from a local rich businessman (Roy Kinnear), they accidently stumble across a gang of real art thieves who have just stolen £1 million worth of paintings. It is up to the two bungling cops to stop them escaping with their haul.

Besides Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball, the movie also stars a cast of well-known British entertainment faces including Eric Sykes (who is rather funny in this), Roy Kinnear, Jack Douglas, gorgeous Suzanne Danielle (of Carry On Emmannuelle fame), Edward "Think Bike!" Judd, Jon "The Doctor" Pertwee, Arthur English and Nigel "Look Around You" Lambert, amongst others. Directed (and co-written) by the legendary Val Guest - who also directed Confessions Of A Window Cleaner, Au Pair Girls, Carry On Admiral, The Abominable Snowman, the Quatermass and Up The Creek films, The Day The Earth Caught Fire, When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth and some scenes in the original Casino Royale, besides many others.

The Boys In Blue is a light, entertaining and nicely daft British comedy which is perfect fodder for a late night or Sunday afternoon - and it has a rather funky soundtrack too (which somebody should release). The catchy theme song was released as a single - of which you can get here.
